[Mang-tae Grandpa : Korean Traditional Monstrous thing / 망태 할아범]

'Mang-Tae Grandpa'.

A mesh bag made of straw (we called 'Mang-Tae'), an old man with it on his back, he has long been called by Korean parents to frighten children who have been nagging and disobedient. (It's a monster similar to the West's 'Boogie Man.')

He is known as the evil child's natural enemy.

But his bizarre ability is far greater than scaring a mean child.
He is a monster goblin who controls every goblin with a goblin hat, an object that has the ability to hide itself, and a goblin family register that knows every goblin in the world.

He wears a mask of 'Ohmjung' on his face. One of his origins was based on a nasty story that Hansen's patients kidnapped and ate a child.
"Ohmjung" is a mask of a fallen monk with skin disease and it is a character in a traditional Korean mask play.
On his back, he carried a basket containing all the disgusting and ugly things of the dark.
It was conceived from the basket of 'Junkman' which was one of his origins.
The 'Junkman' refers to the poor who collect garbage that appeared in the late Joseon Dynasty.

As time goes by, he plays a role in catching, torturing, and punishing bad adults, not mean children.

The goblins that follow Mang-tae Grandpa also look like a shaggy man, a traditional Korean goblin, not a Japanese monster, 'Oni'.
It is also the part of the work that has been cared about.

망태를 등에 맨 노인인 그는 예로부터 떼쓰고 말 안듣는 아이들을 겁주기 위해 불려온 존재로
말을 듣지 않으면 망태기로 잡아다 혼내주고, 울면 입을 꿰매어 버리고, 떼를 쓰면 새장에 가두고,
밤 늦도록 자지 않으면 올빼미로 만들어버리는 못된 어린이들의 천적으로 알려졌다.

하지만 그의 괴의한 능력은 못된 아이를 겁주는 것보다 훨씬 더 대단한데 모습을 감추는 능력을 가진 주구(呪具),
도깨비 감투와 세상 천지 도깨비를 모두 알 수 있는 도깨비 호적을 가지고 도깨비들을 호령하는 괴수 도깨비가 바로 망태할배였다.

망태할배는 얼굴에 옴중의 탈을 쓰고있으며, 그것은 과거 망태할배의 유래 중 문둥병 환자들이 아이를 납치해 잡아먹었다는
고약한 설에서 착안 되었으며 옴(피부병)걸린 파계승인 옴중의 탈을 쓰고 장삼을 입었다.
등에는 음지의 갖은 역하고 흉측한 것들이 들어있는 광주리를 들러 매었는데, 이 또한 망태 할배의 유래인
조선 말의 넝마주이,넝마꾼들의 그 것이었다.

세월이 흐름에 따라 못된 어른들을 도깨비를 부려 산채로 잡아다 고문하고 벌하는 역할을 하니
그것은 유투부의 ‘과나’생원의 작품에서 따온 것이라.

망태 할배를 따르는 도깨비들 또한 왜놈들의 요괴 오니(鬼👹)가 아닌 전통 도깨비의 형상인 덥수룩한
남정내의 모습을 하고 있으니 그 또한 신경을 쓴 부분이더라.
